Sealevel Systems, Inc. announces RoHS PCI serial I/O card

Sealevel Systems, Inc. announces the first RoHS-compliant multi-interface PCI serial I/O card, the ULTRA 530.LPCI. The board offers a selectable RS-232/422/485/530 interface and is MD1 low profile and universal bus compatible (3.3V or 5V). The ULTRA 530.LPCI is the first in a series of forthcoming RoHS-compliant product introductions as Sealevel embraces this important environmental initiative.

Sealevel is proactively leading the industry in the development of high-quality communications and I/O products that meet the RoHS (2002/95/EC) and WEEE (2002/96/EC) directives adopted by the European Union. The RoHS directive restricts the use of lead and certain other hazardous materials in electronic products. Sealevel designs all new products for RoHS compatibility and is modifying legacy products and manufacturing processes for RoHS compliance. The Company will continue to offer both RoHS-compliant and non-compliant products to meet global and domestic customer demand.

Designed using the XR16C850 UART, the ULTRA 530.LPCI supports standard PC data rates and boasts a top speed of 921.6K bps. The board provides a 128-byte FIFO to allow datacom applications to run error free. An array of enhanced UART options is also available, including a version that allows external clocking. Included in the design is Sealevel’s RS-485 auto-enable circuit that automatically handles RS-485 driver control to facilitate compatibility with standard COM drivers. The low profile form factor is especially useful in applications where space is at a premium such as 1U Servers, Thin Clients, and Net Appliance applications.

The ULTRA 530.LPCI ships with Sealevel Systems’ SeaCOM™ suite of Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP drivers. Sealevel also includes WinSSD, a full-featured application providing powerful testing and diagnostic capabilities. Use WinSSD for BERT (Bit Error Rate Testing), throughput monitoring, loopback tests, and transmit test pattern messages. In addition to Windows drivers and utilities, SeaCOM includes drivers, utilities, application notes, and technical details to simplify installations in DOS, QNX, and LINUX.

The RoHS-compliant ULTRA 530.LPCI, product number 7106-RoHS, is available immediately from stock. Price is $229.00 in low volume quantities and a non-RoHS version, product number 7106, is also available.

For more information on Sealevel Systems, please contact Earle Foster at Sealevel by phone at (864) 843-4343, or by e-mail at earlef@sealevel.com.

Search Engines Increasing in Popularity

Search engines have become an increasingly important part of the online experience of American internet users. The most recent findings from Pew Internet & American Life tracking surveys and consumer behavior trends from the comScore Media Metrix consumer panel show that about 60 million American adults are using search engines on a typical day.

These results from September 2005 represent a sharp increase from mid-2004. Pew Internet Project data from June 2004 show that use of search engines on a typical day has risen from 30% to 41% of the internet-using population, which itself has grown in the past year. This means that the number of those using search engines on an average day jumped from roughly 38 million in June 2004 to about 59 million in September 2005 – an increase of about 55%. comScore data, which are derived from a different methodology, show that from September 2004 to September 2005 the average daily use of search engines jumped from 49.3 million users to 60.7 million users – an increase of 23%.

This means that the use of search engines is edging up on email as a primary internet activity on any given day. The Pew Internet Project data show that on a typical day, email use is still the top internet activity. On any given day, about 52% of American internet users are sending and receiving email, up from 45% in June of 2004.

Third Annual AOL Instant Messaging Survey Finds IM Up

Instant messaging (IM) is up 19 percent year over year and is deeply entrenched in the U.S. with many Americans sending as many – if not more – IMs than they do emails. Meanwhile, at-work and mobile messaging have gone mainstream, according to the third annual Instant Messaging Trends Survey from AOL.

According to IDC, more than 28 million business users worldwide use instant messaging to send nearly 1 billion messages each day at work.(3) Meanwhile, the AOL Instant Messaging Trends survey revealed that more than three in four at-work IM users (77 percent) say that instant messaging has had a positive impact on their work lives. In addition, one in four (25 percent) of at-work IMers say that instant messaging enables them to check in on their children during the workday, providing greater peace of mind.

In addition, among those who use instant messaging for business purposes, 13 percent say they have their IM screen name printed on their business card, while six percent say they write it on the business cards they exchange.
