Silver Crescent Foundation launches Camp Success

Industry
The Silver Crescent Foundation has launched Camp Success, a summer camp program aimed at luring more young people into engineering and technology related careers.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, overall engineering employment is expected to grow by 9 to 17 percent by 2014. “Competitive pressures and advancing technology will force companies to improve and update product designs and to optimize their manufacturing processes. Employers will rely on engineers to further increase productivity as investment in plant and equipment increases to expand output of goods and services. New technologies continue to improve the design process, enabling engineers to produce and analyze various product designs much more rapidly than in the past. Unlike in other fields, however, technological advances are not expected to limit employment opportunities substantially, because they will permit the development of new products and processes.”*

Many engineering related jobs are among the highest-paid in South Carolina. In the Columbia area alone, the mean annual salary for industrial engineers is in excess of $66,000. In the Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson area, electrical engineers may earn more than $75,000 per year.** Yet many high school and college students are not considering engineering and technology as career options either because they are unaware of the opportunities or they consider the work outmoded.

As a way to connect with tomorrow’s business leaders, the Silver Crescent Foundation has created a summer camp focusing on engineering, for students entering grades 7 or 8. Camp details are online at www.campsuccess.org. This state-of-the-art day camp helps students develop the creative, innovative thinking skills that are behind all the latest technologies. Campers will gain hands-on problem solving and design experience by solving real problems.

“Campers won’t be saying, ‘Why must we learn this,’ or ‘will this be on the test,’” Minnie Blackwell, director and curriculum coordinator for the Trident Education Business Alliance, said. “They will actually tackle real community projects, enjoy technology and build working relationships. They will be introduced to the nature of engineering using rigor, relevance and relationship. The campers’ week will be a fun, full week tied to issues young people are already thinking about, but most important, they will be able to solve a problem for their customer and walk away knowing the essence of the field of engineering.”

Camp Success will be held June 11 – 17 at Midlands Technical College and June 18 – 24 at Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College. Application forms and detailed information can be found at the Camp Success web site, www.campsuccess.org, or by contacting Midlands Technical College (Permelia Luongo) at (803) 738-7743 or luongop@midlandstech.edu, or Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College (Denise Kearse) at (803) 535-1409 or kearsed@OCtech.edu.

Camp Success 2006 is made possible by funds from the U.S. Department of Education and through the support of the South Carolina Congressional Delegation, Midlands Education and Technology Alliance, Midlands Technical College, Next Generation Manufacturing Technology Initiative, Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College, the Office of Career and Technology Education, South Carolina Department of Education, and Carolina Careers.
