Palmetto Cluster Benchmarking 31 Teraflops

Clemson University — Clemson University’s high-performance computing cluster, the Palmetto Cluster, is currently reporting being able to handle 31 trillion operations per second.  Such high speed computing is measured in Teraflops or trillions of floating operations per second.  Using 512 Dell PowerEdge 1950 servers, the Palmetto Cluster is intended for use in a wide range academic research across multiple disciples such as wireless communication development, molecular dynamics, and even childhood developmental studies.

Today in an official Dell press release regarding the Palmetto Cluster, Jim Bottum, Clemson’s vice provost and chief information officer said, “The Palmetto Cluster is a shared computing infrastructure offering enhanced computational research capabilities that will benefit our entire research community.  A system of this class from Dell, combined with quality research faculty, highly-trained support staff and world-class operations, is providing Clemson with a cyberinfrastructure for the future.”

The Palmetto Cluster has the eventual goal of turning out 100 Teraflops.
