Karanfil Named Chairman of Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences

Professor Tanju Karanfil has been named chairman of the department of environmental engineering and earth sciences (EEES) at Clemson University.

“With all of the challenges of environmental quality that we face in the 21st century, Dr. Karanfil’s experience makes him an excellent choice for the role of chairperson of this highly ranked and prestigious department,” said Esin Gulari, dean of the College of Engineering and Science. 

Karanfil completed his undergraduate work at Istanbul Technical University and received his master’s degree and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. He joined Clemson in 1996. His current research focuses on the physical and chemical processes for removing synthetic organic contaminants and natural organic materials from water and formation of disinfection by-products during water and wastewater treatment processes. He is a recipient of the National Science Foundation Early CAREER Award, College of Engineering and Science McQueen Quattlebaum Award and the American Water Works Association’s Academic Achievement Award.
