At the February GSA Technology Council learning lunch, Upstate Nanotechnology Entrepreneur Michael Bolick will tell us about the start of Selah Technologies, how they have developed an idea, built a team, acquired grants and investment, and launched a high tech startup in the upstate.
In 2006 Selah Technologies obtained a worldwide exclusive license from Clemson University to develop and commercialize the patent-pending platform nanotechnology Selah Dots™ and Selah Tubes™. In November 2007, Selah received a $100,000 SBIR Phase I grant from the National Science Foundation to fund additional development activities for the company’s Selah Tubes™ nanotechnology along with $200,000 in funding from SC Launch.
“Manufacturing is not dead” says Bolick. “Advanced Materials is the perfect growth platform for Upstate South Carolina’s economy.” His company, Selah Technologies is just one of the companies forming the nascent Advanced Materials cluster in South Carolina.

South Carolina’s best funded Startup in years is QTires. Although we don’t think much about the need for studded tires in South Carolina, they are a fact of life in pretty much all points north of here. QTires has developed and patented a technology that allows the studs to appear or retract on demand. At this meeting we’ll here how QTires was born, how it ended up in South Carolina, and how did they go about gathering $8 Million dollars in investment.
Q Tires is a global manufacturer and marketer of all-year, all-weather tires, containing patented, deployable Studs on Cue technology. This technology allows drivers to deploy or retract those studs as needed when confronting snow and ice. The founder of Q Tires began in Oregon with an idea and developed concepts of the tire. Research and development has been conducted in Akron, Ohio. The company came to South Carolina for leadership and know-how to translate their breakthrough into a viable company. Its Greenville headquarters operations today include finance, sales, marketing, quality assurance, and tire engineering & design. The company is relocating it’s Research and Development to South Carolina.

From an idea, or several ideas, to the creation of a company, it’s growth, and eventual sale to a strategic buyer. This is the whole story of a software company built and sold in Greenville. Through their early efforts, they accidentally discovered an unmet market demand for educational analytics — and then seized the opportunity. Come hear about one local software entrepreneur’s journey as he helped found and grow TetraData Corporation.

Peter Waldschmidt is an entrepreneur with a love for innovative technology. He co-founded TetraData Corporation in 1997, serving as its Chief Technology Officer. While at TetraData, he and his team designed an analytical software platform that enabled school administrators to gain insight into their strengths and weaknesses ( i.e. business intelligence for schools). During this period, he and his partners grew the company nationally becoming the market leader for educational analytics. In 2004 they raised venture capital to fund their continued growth and eventually sold the company to Follett Software Corporation in 2006.more…
